Historic Whaler Restoration Group
About
The Western Beach Boat Club Geelong is restoring one of the very few naval whalers still in use. These 27’ x 6’ (8.2x1.8m) clinker-built yawls where the sea boats on Royal Australian, New Zealand and British Naval vessels from the 1890’s to the 1960’s.
They were an integral part of every naval engagement during that period, and of particular importance during the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli.
Shipwright Vaughan ……. Of Timber Technik is leading the restoration and was instrumental in the 2004? Of salvaging the whaler after it sunk at Williamstown. (www.timbertechnik.com/our-story)
The whaler was built from Huon Pine for the NZ navy in 1942 and in the 1960’s, was sold privately to a seafarer who sailed it extensively around NZ before being brought to Australia on a NZ warship for the Williamstown Naval Cadets.
This important restoration will result in the whaler being based at the Western Beach Boat Club for use by the community.
We need support to complete the project. If you can help in any way, with skilled labour or funding please leave your name on the … or contact via SMS Bill Ethell on 0401730401 or email bill.ethell@gmail.com
